Are you looking for support groups for people who are deaf and use sign language in Los Angeles, CA? If so, you're in luck! There are a number of organizations that provide therapeutic services and support to deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the area. Five Acres is one such organization that offers American Sign Language (ASL) services to deaf and hard of hearing children in Los Angeles. They have also expanded their mental health services to include deaf adults, providing individual and family therapy for deaf people in their home, school, or community. Hearing loss can range from mild to moderate, and may or may not be corrected with amplification.
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), approximately 30 million Americans have hearing loss in both ears, while 48 million Americans have hearing loss in at least one ear. Walk4Hearing is a national campaign that brings hope to people with hearing loss in 20 cities across the country. They meet with individuals in their communities to raise awareness and show their support. Walk4Hearing is run by the American Hearing Loss Association (HLAA).
Deafness is defined as a hearing loss that prevents a person from understanding speech through the ear. People with this condition may benefit from having a native or near-native command of ASL, which can be helpful in situations where there are linguistic difficulties or cultural differences, such as highly traumatic medical or emergency situations, legal proceedings, and technically complex tasks. In the past, deaf and hard of hearing people communicated through telecommunications devices known as TTY or TDD. However, modern technology has made it easier for these individuals to communicate with others via phone calls.
The user experience of the person listening to the call remains the same as with any other phone call. Walk4Hearing from HLAA increases public awareness of hearing loss, eradicates the stigma associated with it, and raises funds for national and local programs.
